Why we’re supporting Mental Health Awareness Week

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week from 13th – 19th May. Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation the campaign aims to educate and raise awareness about mental illness.

In recent decades it’s no secret that there has been a growing body of research and evidence highlighting that burnout, mental-ill health and work-related stress as an issue within the UK dental profession. With a recent BDA literature review and qualitative study into the health and wellbeing of dentists concluding that a fusion of dentist-specific stressors pose a potential threat to vulnerable dentists1.

With more than half of dentists saying stress is affecting their practice2, and a further report concluding that a stigma still exists inhibiting professionals from seeking help3, we wanted to support the campaign this week.

Here our Commercial Director Simon Reynolds shares his own experiences with mental health and why he feels it’s important we don’t shy away from talking about mental health issues.
